Other uses...

As I explore the use of Blogs, I see that they can go beyond one person pontificating for the world. A Blog can be a means of communication between a group, such as the Brattleboro Hockey Assn. It can be similar to an e-mail, with a threaded discussion, and all the past comments saved for review. It can also be a private group, so a discussion can take place with privacy. Odd thought for the Internet!
Another use I have seen in the religous use of blogs is an e-church. The minister gives his sermon over a Blog. This by itself isn't too innovative. It's too similar to a book written in installments, or a series of printed essays. I can get that at the bookstore. But a Blog written in response to comments from a real person becomes more personal, and will be more effecatious for the person in need.
A Blog would also be a way to keep up with a specific speaker or singer. I have in mind a couple I met recently who have left their standard church to travel and provide inspirational events for many churches. He speaks and she sings. Blogging (with photos, a calender, RSS and podcasting integrated), would be a way for people to get to know them.

  • Alice, check out the website for the Unitarian Univeralist Church of the Larger Fellowhship, a UU congregation "by mail" and cyberspace, that includes a community of over 3000 members. The CLF serves its members, many of whom are geographically isolated, by means of its newsletter (Quest), the children's magazine (uu&me), its 800 number, e-mail, three e-mail discussion lists, its website, a loan library, programs at General Assembly, and the occasional personal visit. The CLF also provides extensive worship support to small congregations.
